after breaking your spine
you had blood all over your elbows
you did not believe anyone could cry for you
i could not talk to you for days
i hid in attics like a sparrow
i hid under beds like a mouse
my friends and i spied on our neighbours
and stole watermelons from a stranger's house
none of us knew how to love
we were given assignments with no instructions
i did not know how to scream or to move or to kiss your hands
if they said they brought you back alive   so i crouched behind a bedframe
when the door of unknown opened
                      i turned away.
after that day, you never believed me.
in my own time, i did my required readings,
learned to unlock bodies with a sleight of hand.
when i close my eyes, i wonder what it was like to be falling,
to be waiting for the taxi that took too long,
that dragged your bones over bumpy loam.
i did cry in the car while your body was rebroken.
i would like to climb down the cliffs and rest

japan, the woman in the black dress
japan, my dear, you were so beautiful
even after the craving trapped me
on an island buried in radiation and gloom by
a hiroshima cloud
i tracked the kitsuné down to the pier
and in fearful deception it became the
woman, sensuous in the black dress, who
was the delusion bound to my mind by
obsession, love, lust;
it kept me here in this terrible place
as the cloud lifted and dissipated into the ocean breeze
i could see- the advantage was finally mine,
clutched it at the throat and squeezed;
it's amatory front remained until
the moment it died, and
meanwhile i watched the expression
roll off of its face-
my eyes became dry in tense anticipation
and the tips of my fingers dripped with
something more than blood
i released
and let the
body concede to the ground
now i swim alone (i always was) from
the edge of this world to the edge of another
